Frequently Asked Questions
Why am I required to take a coronal polishing course if I have no intention of performing the skill?
Since the scope of practice for EFDA changed in 2010, all EFDAs must be educated in this procedure, whether or not you ever plan to use it.

Why are we just receiving postcards now notifying us of this educational requirement?
The State Board sent out notification to all dentists a few years ago informing them of the change in scope of practice.  The postcards came from us as we were becoming aware that EFDAs across the state did not know they needed a course to renew in March.

If I am a hygienist and an EFDA, do I need to take the Coronal Polishing course?
No, there are 3 exemptions as per Section 33.401 (g) of the Dental Law:

 (g)  Expanded function dental assistants shall comply with the following:

   (1)  Except as provided in paragraph (2), expanded function dental assistants shall complete 3 of the 10 required hours of continuing education in the area of coronal polishing as follows:

     (i)   Unless an exemption applies, an expanded function dental assistant certified by the Board by March 31, 2011, shall complete the 3 hours of continuing education in the area of coronal polishing as a condition of renewal for the biennial period which begins on April 1, 2013.

(ii)   Unless an exemption applies, an expanded function dental assistant certified by the Board after March 31, 2011, shall complete the 3 hours of continuing education in the area of coronal polishing as a condition of renewal for the first complete biennial renewal period after initial certification.

   (2)  The following expanded function dental assistants are exempt from the requirement to complete 3 hours of continuing education in coronal polishing in paragraph (1):

     (i)   Expanded function dental assistants who are also licensed as dental hygienists.

(ii)   Expanded function dental assistants who can document that they have completed coursework including coronal polishing as part of their education at a Board-approved EFDA education program at any time after June 28, 2010.

(iii)   Expanded function dental assistants who can document that they have completed a course in coronal polishing of at least 3 hours offered by an approved program sponsor at any time after June 28, 2010.

   (3)  The requirements of this subsection may not be met through video, online or distance education, but shall be completed by physical attendance at a hands-on clinical training course offered by an approved program sponsor or an approved EFDA education program.

What are the benefits of membership?
Fellowship of colleagues across the state, an organized voice for the profession in Harrisburg, a newsletter to keep current with events, notice of required CEU courses, clinical skills workshops are just a few of the benefits of joining.

Who is eligible to join the EFDA Association?

EFDAs certified by the State Board of Dentistry and students of EFDA programs.  Dentists, manufacturers sales representatives, may join as associate members but not have voting privledges.

What credentials does an EFDA hold?

EFDAs are highly trained dental auxiliaries and as of 2008, must pass the EFDA Certification Examination.  Upon successful completion of the examination, the PA State Board of Dentistry grants certification.

How can an assistant become an EFDA?

The requirements for admittance into a Continuing Studies program may include: CDA certification by Dental Assisting National Board and/or passing a program's entrance exam (can include dental anatomy, dental materials and chairside assisting) and a minimum of one year FT dental assisting experience.  These requirements may vary from school to school.  ADA accredited schools also offer a full time Associate degree program including chairside assisting and EFDA training.  Both options of EFDA courses require over 200 hours of didactic, preclinical and clinical experience to be eligible for examination.
